Brewer Bantam Black team ends season as 2017 State Runner-up

The BYH U14 team qualified for the State tournament with a runner up finish in the North Regional tournament and was seeded second in Pool A.  The first game on Friday was against the Jr Polar Bears U14 team and the BYH Team had to play the game with two starters on the bench and only had 8 available players.  The BYH team played a close game, fought hard, but came up short in the end with a 3-1 loss.  Brewer’s lone goal came off the stick of first year Bantam player Colby Pawson late in the second period, with an assist from Sam Savin.

The Saturday morning game came against the SAM U14 team, another north team in Pool A, and this was the fifth meeting between the teams this season.  The team controlled the game and the play from the first drop of the puck and SAM’s lone goal came with just 2:19 left in the game and BYH won the game 2-1, Brewer’s goals were scored by Kolby Brooks, assisted by Aubrey Badger and Liam Spaulding, assisted by Kolby Brooks

The Saturday Afternoon game came against the number one seed in Pool A, Western Maine Youth Hockey and Brewer needed a win to qualify for the semifinals on Sunday.  With a solid defensive effort Goalie Tyler St Lawerence was able to post his only shutout of the tournament and was supported by a goal in the first period by Jordan Parkhurst, unassisted and with one in the second by Nick Nason, assisted by Jake Parker.  The win propelled Brewer to first place in Pool A and a early Sunday morning matchup with the cross town rival Maine Jr Black Bears

These teams also met in the North Semi final with Brewer coming out on top.  After playing to a scoreless first period, Brewer opened the scoring early in the second period with a goal by Kolby Brooks, assisted by Jordan Parkhurst.  The third period started with a 1-1 score and Jordan Parkhurst scored his third goal of the weekend unassisted and Kolby Brooks scored the winning goal with an assist from Aubrey Badger and the team was headed onto the State Finals against the USM Huskies Gold team.

The game didn’t start as well as the team hoped and USM was able to score just 30 seconds into the game and Brewer was down 2-0 at the start of the second period.  The teams played a defensive struggle with each team having multiple chances, but both goalies were up to the challenge and turn away shot after shot.  Brewer was finally able to break the ice with a lone second period score by Colby Pawson, assisted by Jake Parker.  With the game winding down and Brewer down 4-1 Aubrey Badger was able to get Brewer with in two after a lengthy review by the officials but with only 10 seconds left in the game it was just not enough to overcome the early deficit and ended up losing 4-2 to the State Champions USM Huskies.

The Brewer U14 black team gave their best effort all weekend and represented the organization and the Northern division with pride.  Even though it was not the outcome the team hoped for, everyone involved, from the coach’s, the parents and the organization could not be more proud of the kids for their play and the sportsmanship they showed all weekend and proving once again that Brewer Youth Hockey provides a great place for kids to learn to play hockey.
